A Desert Surrounded By Icy Mountains

It is well-known that Transbaikal or Zabaykalsky Krai is a region with snow-capped mountains and huge ice fields to the east of Lake Baikal in Russia. But not many people are aware of the fact that a true desert can be found in the place.

Chara Sands are located in Kalarsky District of Zabaykalsky Krai, the sand band is 10 km long and 5 km wide.Chara Sands were formed during the Zyrian glaciation period as a lake delta at the front zone of the Sakukan glacier, when Chara hollow was filled with water.
